Luxury Rwanda safaris

4 Days Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tracking Tour

Starts and ends in Entebbe, Uganda

This four-day luxury safari takes you from Entebbe through the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda to the misty rainforests of Bwindi, then on to the volcanic slopes of Mgahinga. You will meet endangered mountain gorillas, track the playful golden monkeys, and stay in some of the finest lodges in the region, with a stop at Lake Bunyonyi on the way back.

Day 1: Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Your safari begins early in the morning with a pickup from your hotel or the airport in Entebbe. Your professional driver-guide will brief you on the journey and the days ahead, and you will set off southwest in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, perfect for photography.

The drive passes through the busy outskirts of Kampala, then crosses the Equator at Kayabwe, where you can stop for the classic photo with one foot in each hemisphere. The road continues through Masaka and into the rolling countryside of the southwest, with banana plantations, tea estates, and the long-horned Ankole cattle grazing along the roadsides.

You will stop for lunch in Mbarara, the largest town in the region. Choose a quality restaurant here, or ask your guide about a pre-arranged lunch stop along the way.

After lunch, continue to Kabale, often called the “Switzerland of Africa” for its terraced hillsides, cool air, and mountain scenery. The final stretch winds through the highlands into the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

You will arrive in time to check in, freshen up, and enjoy a sundowner on your private terrace as the forest settles into evening.

Dinner and overnight: Gorilla Safari Lodge (Luxury), or alternatively Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or Buhoma Lodge for a more exclusive upgrade.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking and Batwa Community Experience

Today is the highlight of your safari. After an early breakfast, you will gather at the park headquarters, where Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers brief you on the rules for meeting the gorillas. These include keeping a safe distance, speaking quietly, avoiding flash photography, and staying away if you are unwell. You will be assigned to a gorilla family, and a ranger team will lead you into the forest.

The trek can take anywhere from two to six hours, depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. The terrain is steep and the vegetation thick, but trackers go ahead to locate the family, and porters are available to carry your bag and offer a hand on the slopes. Hiring a porter is highly recommended, and it supports local families directly.

Then comes the moment you have been waiting for. You will spend one full hour in the company of a gorilla family, watching massive silverbacks keep watch, mothers nursing infants, and youngsters tumbling through the undergrowth. It is a humbling and unforgettable encounter, and the hour passes quickly.

After the trek, you will return to the park headquarters, where you receive a certificate of tracking, and then head back to your lodge for a well-deserved lunch and some relaxation. A hot shower, a massage, or a rest by the fire are all good options.

In the late afternoon, you can join a guided community walk with the Batwa people, the original forest dwellers and guardians of Bwindi before the park was created. They will share their traditional hunting methods, medicinal plants, songs, dances, and stories of life in the forest. Your visit supports the community directly.

Dinner and overnight: Gorilla Safari Lodge (Luxury).

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga and Lake Bunyonyi

Rise early today for a scenic drive through the Kigezi highlands to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, arriving by 8:00 am. The park sits within the Virunga Mountains, a chain of dramatic volcanoes shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the views along the way are superb.

After a briefing from the rangers, you will head into the bamboo and montane forest to track the golden monkeys. These rare, striking primates have golden-orange coats and are found only in the Virunga region. They are lively and photogenic, moving in large troops and leaping through the bamboo, which makes them very rewarding to watch. You will spend an hour with them once found.

The forest also offers encounters with other primates, a wide variety of montane endemic birds, and spectacular volcano views, so keep your camera ready.

After the trek, you will drive to Lake Bunyonyi, a stunning highland lake dotted with 29 islands and fringed by terraced hills. Check in, take in the views, and enjoy a quiet evening with a lakeside dinner.

Dinner and overnight: Birdnest at Bunyonyi Resort (Luxury), or Arcadia Cottages as a comfortable alternative.

Day 4: Lake Bunyonyi to Kampala and Entebbe

After a leisurely breakfast with views over the lake, you may take a short canoe ride or simply enjoy the calm before the journey back. You will then set off for Kampala, with stops for photographs, stretching your legs, and lunch along the way. Roadside stands offer fresh fruit and local snacks if you want to try something.

You will reach Kampala or Entebbe in the late afternoon. Depending on your plans, you will be transferred to your hotel for dinner and overnight, or taken directly to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.

End of tour.
