Luxury Rwanda safaris

12-Day Ultra-Luxury Rwanda Safari & Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda has quietly become one of Africa’s most compelling luxury safari destinations — a country where volcanic peaks, ancient rainforest, and pristine lakes are stitched together by smooth roads and world-class lodges, all within a few hours’ drive of the capital. This twelve-day journey is designed for travelers who want the full spectrum of Rwanda’s wildlife experiences — savannah game drives, chimpanzee and gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, and lakeside serenity — without compromising on comfort, privacy, or service at any point along the way.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Your journey begins the moment you step off the plane at Kigali International Airport, where a private guide and a luxury 4×4 await to whisk you into the city. Rather than rushing straight into the safari circuit, the first day is built around gentle acclimatization — settle into your five-star hotel, then choose between an in-room spa treatment or a curated introduction to Kigali’s history and creative scene, taking in the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Inema Arts Center.

Luxury stay options: Kigali Serena Hotel, The Retreat by Heaven, or Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre — each offering polished service, fine dining, and a comfortable base before heading into the bush.

Day 2: Kigali in Depth, Then Into the Wild

A private city tour reveals a different side of Kigali: the energy of Kimironko Market and the sobering history at the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. By early afternoon, the pace shifts entirely — a helicopter transfer (or, for those who prefer the scenic overland route, a chauffeured 4×4) delivers you into Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only true savannah reserve and home to the country’s Big Five.

Luxury stay options: Magashi Camp, Ruzizi Tented Lodge, or Mantis Akagera Game Lodge — each positioned for direct access into the park’s wildest corners.

Day 3: Akagera — Big Five Territory

This is a full day immersed in the savannah. A sunrise game drive in a private vehicle offers the best chance of tracking lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo across Akagera’s open plains and acacia woodland, with a bush brunch to break up the morning. The afternoon shifts to water: a boat safari on Lake Ihema brings you close to hippo pods, basking crocodiles, and some of the richest birdlife in the region. The day closes the way an Akagera evening should — fireside, under an open sky, with dinner and stories at your lodge.

Luxury stay options: Magashi Camp, Ruzizi Tented Lodge, or Mantis Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 4: A Final Morning in the Bush, Return to Kigali

An unhurried morning game drive or guided birding walk gives you one last taste of Akagera before returning to Kigali by road or air. The afternoon is left open — browse the city’s contemporary art and design boutiques, or simply relax before an evening of fine dining, with Fusion Restaurant at The Retreat among the standout choices for a memorable send-off dinner.

Luxury stay options: Kigali Serena Hotel, The Retreat by Heaven, or Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre.

Day 5: Into the Cloud Forest — Nyungwe National Park

The road to Nyungwe Forest cuts through some of Rwanda’s most striking countryside — a land famously described as “a thousand hills,” dotted with tea plantations and terraced farmland. Along the way, two cultural stops add texture to the journey: the ethnographic museum in Huye and the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza, both offering insight into Rwanda’s royal and pre-colonial history before you arrive in one of Africa’s oldest rainforests.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, or Gisakura Guest House — with One&Only Nyungwe House standing out for its tea-estate setting and infinity pool overlooking the forest canopy.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking

An early start rewards you with Nyungwe’s signature experience: tracking wild chimpanzees through dense, ancient forest alongside expert local trackers. Watching a troop move through the canopy — vocal, agile, unmistakably intelligent — is one of the most exhilarating wildlife encounters on the continent. With the trek complete by midday, the afternoon is yours to unwind, with optional tea plantation tours or a spa treatment rounding out the day.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, or Gisakura Guest House.

Day 7: Canopy Walk & Colobus Monkeys

Nyungwe’s forest canopy walkway — one of only a handful in Africa — offers a suspension-bridge perspective high above the treetops, with sweeping views across the forest and, on clear days, out toward the surrounding valleys. Later, you’ll track troops of Angolan colobus monkeys, striking black-and-white primates that move through the forest in groups that can number in the hundreds. The evening is unstructured, simply time to absorb the calm of the forest around your lodge.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, or Gisakura Guest House.

Day 8: Lakeside Luxury on Lake Kivu

From forest to freshwater coast: the transfer to Karongi (Kibuye) delivers you to the shores of Lake Kivu, one of the African Great Lakes and, by many accounts, one of the continent’s most underrated lakeside destinations. The rest of the day is built entirely around relaxation — lounging by the water, a scenic boat excursion to Napoleon Island, or a lakeside massage as the sun drops over the water.

Luxury stay options: Cormoran Lodge, Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, or Clevers Lake Kivu Hotel.

Day 9: Onward to Volcanoes National Park

The drive from Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park winds through the green, terraced hills around Musanze, with the jagged silhouettes of the Virunga volcanoes rising ahead — your first real glimpse of gorilla country. After settling into a mountain lodge, the afternoon offers a choice: rest, or visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for an authentic encounter with local Rwandan life and traditions.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, or Virunga Lodge — three of the most celebrated luxury lodges in East Africa, each with direct views of the volcanoes and gorilla trekking departure points close by.

Day 10: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

This is the day the entire journey has been building toward. After an early briefing, you’ll hike into dense rainforest with experienced trackers in search of one of Volcanoes National Park’s habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek itself varies in length and difficulty depending on the family’s location that morning, but the reward is constant: a full hour in the presence of gorillas in their natural habitat, an encounter widely described as one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth. Back at the lodge, celebrate with a private sunset dinner.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, or Virunga Lodge.

Day 11: Golden Monkeys or Mount Bisoke

Your penultimate day offers a genuine choice of adventure level. The golden monkey trek is a lighter, highly rewarding experience — tracking playful, endangered golden monkeys through bamboo forest. For more active travelers, the Mount Bisoke hike is a serious but achievable volcano ascent, culminating in a crater lake at the summit and sweeping views across the Virunga range. Either way, the day winds down with a farewell massage and a celebratory final dinner at your lodge.

Luxury stay options: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, or Virunga Lodge.

Day 12: Departure

A relaxed final breakfast precedes the transfer back to Kigali, with time built in for last-minute shopping, a final museum visit, or simply unwinding before your flight. VIP airport assistance ensures a smooth, unhurried departure to close out the trip.
