Gorillas Trek Africa is a leading African safari company specialising in exceptional wildlife and cultural experiences throughout East Africa
Gorilla Trekking Across the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Forest.

Few wildlife experiences rival the hour spent face to face with a wild mountain gorilla family. Mountain gorillas exist in only two isolated populations on Earth — the Virunga Massif, which straddles Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda. Trekking to see them is physically demanding, tightly regulated, and, by nearly universal account, one of the most moving encounters travelers can have with a wild animal. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda each offer this experience with a distinct character, shaped by terrain, history, and the personalities of the gorilla families themselves.

Bwindi National Park

One of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife experiences: trekking through dense, misty rainforest to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park lies at the foot of five Virunga volcanoes near Musanze, Rwanda. It’s where Dian Fossey worked, and her Karisoke research station and grave remain a separate, often-combined hike. Treks start around 7 a.m. with briefings and family assignments, then move through farmland, bamboo, and Afro-alpine terrain at high altitude (2,500–3,000+ meters), making some hikes steep despite short one-to-two-hour approaches for accessible families; others take four to six hours through nettles and dense growth, so assignments consider fitness. Once found, visitors get a strict one-hour visit with habituated gorillas often just meters away. Permits cost about $1,500—the region’s highest—funding conservation, alongside Rwanda’s more upscale lodges and infrastructure around Musanze and Kinigi.

Chimpanzee Tracking - Rwanda & Uganda

Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest and Uganda’s Kibale Forest and Kyambura Gorge offers thrilling encounters with wild chimpanzees in their natural rainforest habitat. Guided treks through dense jungle lead visitors to habituated chimp families, where you observe feeding, grooming, and vocal displays up close.

It’s a physically demanding but rewarding primate safari experience, often paired with gorilla trekking for a complete East African wildlife adventure.

Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is best known for gorilla trekking, but its volcanic peaks also offer spectacular hiking. Mount Bisoke (3,711m) is the most popular day hike—a challenging but doable climb through bamboo and moorland to a stunning crater lake at the summit, taking 6-7 hours round trip. Mount Karisimbi (4,507m), Rwanda’s highest peak, is a demanding two-day trek with an overnight camp, rewarding hikers with sweeping views across the Virunga chain. Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m), meaning “old man’s teeth” for its jagged peaks, offers a thrilling ridge climb with ladders along three-country viewpoints (Rwanda, Congo, Uganda). All require permits, guides, and reasonable fitness.
