4-Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trek & Volcanoes Golden Monkey Safari
This safari combines Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park (golden monkeys) with Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (gorillas). Both sit in the Virunga Massif, a short drive apart across the Cyanika border. The sequence below puts the monkeys first, then the border crossing, then the gorilla trek, so you don’t cross the border more often than necessary.
At a Glance
- Day 1: Kigali to Musanze, with a relaxed afternoon
- Day 2: Golden monkey tracking, then cross into Uganda and drive to Kisoro
- Day 3: Mgahinga gorilla trek
- Day 4: Return to Kigali
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes Region)
Your driver-guide collects you in Kigali at about 8:00 am. The drive north takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on a good paved road through the “land of a thousand hills.” Stop for coffee and photos at the scenic viewpoints, such as the Rwamagana-Musanze road overlooks and the terraced hills near Gakenke.
After lunch, check in to your lodge and choose one gentle activity:
- Musanze Caves: ancient lava tubes with guided walks.
- Lakes Burera and Ruhondo: a boat or canoe trip on the twin lakes, with the volcanoes as a backdrop.
- Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village: traditional dance, crafts and storytelling, including a demonstration of life before the gorilla-conservation era.
Have an early dinner and get to bed early, since tomorrow starts at dawn.
Overnight: upper-midrange lodge near Kinigi/Musanze (options below).
Day 2: Golden Monkey Tracking, Then Cross to Uganda
5:30 to 6:00 am: Breakfast. Many lodges will pack it if you request it the evening before.
7:00 am: Briefing at Kinigi (Volcanoes National Park headquarters). Guides assign groups and explain the rules, including the minimum distance and what to do if the monkeys come close.
7:30 am onward: Golden monkey tracking. The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is an endangered species found only in the Virunga bamboo forests. The trek is usually gentler than a gorilla trek, with duration depending on where the troop is feeding. Troops of 80 or more are common, and the monkeys are fast, playful and photogenic. You get about one hour with them.
Late morning: Return to your lodge, freshen up, check out and have an early lunch.
Midday to afternoon: Drive to the Cyanika border (about 30 to 45 minutes from Kinigi). Your driver or a border representative assists with exit and entry formalities. Your Rwandan vehicle may be swapped for a Ugandan one at the border, so confirm this with your operator in advance. From Cyanika it is roughly 30 to 40 minutes to Kisoro and the Mgahinga area. The road winds past Lake Mutanda and farmland with views of the three volcanoes (Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo).
Evening: Check in and settle in for dinner. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow’s early start.
Overnight: upper-midrange lodge near Mgahinga/Kisoro (options below).
Day 3: Mgahinga Gorilla Trek
6:30 am: Early breakfast.
7:30 am: Briefing at the Ntebeko park gate. Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla group, the Nyakagezi group, so permits are limited and must be booked well ahead. Rangers assign you to the group and explain gorilla etiquette: keep your voice down, stay about 7 metres (23 feet) back, and avoid flash photography.
8:00 am onward: The trek. Mgahinga’s terrain mixes bamboo forest, montane forest and steep volcanic slopes. Treks can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorillas spent the night. You can hire a porter at the gate, which I recommend even if you are fit. It helps the local community and makes the ascent easier.
Midday to afternoon: Once you find the Nyakagezi group, you spend one hour with them. Expect to see the silverback, females and juveniles feeding and playing within metres of you. After the hour, you trek back to the gate for a certificate of participation.
Afternoon: Return to your lodge for lunch and rest. If you have energy, there are optional low-key activities:
- Batwa cultural experience: meet the Batwa people, the original forest dwellers, and learn about their traditional hunting and gathering knowledge.
- Lake Mutanda: a canoe trip or a lakeside stroll.
- Kisoro town: a brief visit to the local market.
Overnight: the same upper-midrange lodge near Mgahinga/Kisoro.
Note on the gorilla group: The Nyakagezi group occasionally crosses into Rwanda or the DRC, which can affect permit availability. Ask your operator about their policy in that case. Many will offer a rebooking or an alternative.
Day 4: Return to Kigali
8:00 am: Breakfast, then check out and drive back toward Cyanika, with a possible stop at a viewpoint overlooking Lake Mutanda.
Mid-morning: Exit Uganda and enter Rwanda at Cyanika. You may change vehicles again.
Midday: Lunch in Musanze or at a roadside stop along the way. You could also stop at a craft market or a coffee cooperative.
Afternoon: Continue to Kigali, arriving at about 3:00 to 5:00 pm depending on border times and stops. Your driver drops you at your hotel or the airport. If your flight leaves in the evening, plan for an arrival time that leaves a comfortable buffer, since border delays happen.
Upper-Midrange Lodge Options
Near Musanze/Kinigi (Rwanda), Night 1
- Mountain Gorilla View Lodge: A well-regarded choice in Kinigi, close to the park headquarters. It has rooms with fireplaces, a restaurant, and views of the Virunga volcanoes. It is a good pick if you want to minimise your morning drive on Day 2.
- Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel: A stylish option in Musanze with well-appointed rooms, a spa and a garden. It works well if you want a polished, comfortable stay with easy access to town.
- Gorilla Nest Lodge: A cosy, nature-focused lodge in the Kinigi area with a quiet atmosphere and good service.
Near Mgahinga/Kisoro (Uganda), Nights 2 and 3
- Mount Gahinga Lodge: Probably the best fit for this itinerary, as it is close to the Mgahinga park gate. The thatched cottages have fireplaces and volcano views, and the lodge is known for community involvement, including work with the Batwa people.
- Chameleon Hill Lodge: A boutique lodge above Lake Mutanda with colourful cottages, panoramic views and a relaxed feel. It is a short drive from the park gate, so allow a bit more time on trek morning.
- Lake Mutanda area lodges: Other lakeside properties offer a quieter, scenic stay. Confirm the drive time to the Ntebeko gate when booking.
Lodge rates and room standards change, so ask your operator for current options and availability, and book early. Gorilla permits and good lodges sell out months ahead in the high seasons (June to September and December to February).
Practical Notes
Permits: Both permits must be booked in advance, and prices change periodically. Verify current rates with your operator or the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board. Mgahinga’s single gorilla group means fewer daily permits than Bwindi, so book as early as you can.
Visas: Rwanda and Uganda are both part of the East Africa Tourist Visa scheme, which allows multiple entries between Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Check current requirements for your nationality, since rules and fees are updated regularly.
Health: Uganda typically requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate on entry. Carry a copy. Ask your doctor about malaria prophylaxis too.
What to pack:
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots
- Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (nettles and biting insects)
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- A rain jacket (it can rain any time of year)
- A small daypack with water and snacks
- A camera with no flash
Fitness: The golden monkey trek is moderate. The gorilla trek can be strenuous at altitude (above 2,000 metres), so build in some regular walking before you travel.
Best seasons: The drier months (June to September and December to February) have easier trekking conditions. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) are quieter, with fewer visitors, though trails can be muddy.
If you tell us your travel dates, group size and whether you prefer to prioritise comfort or a lower budget, I can tailor the lodge selection and timing further.
