3-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Mount Bisoke Hike (Kigali Round Trip)
At a glance: Day 1 is the drive to Musanze and a light afternoon. Day 2 is the gorilla trek. Day 3 is the Bisoke crater-lake hike, then the drive back to Kigali. The pace is full but doable, and it puts the gorillas on the day when you are freshest.
Booking notes first:
- The gorilla permit for international visitors is $1,500 per person for a 60-minute encounter with a habituated family. Permits are limited, so book 3 to 6 months in advance via a licensed operator or the Rwanda Development Board’s Irembo platform.
- The Bisoke hike is listed at about $75 for international visitors, and it is usually booked at park headquarters or by your operator. Confirm current fees with RDB, as prices change.
- RDB has also announced discounted permits for East African and other African residents. They don’t apply to most international visitors, so check your eligibility.
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes region)
Morning (about 8:30 am): Your driver-guide collects you from your Kigali hotel or the airport. The road north to Musanze takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and stops. It climbs through the “land of a thousand hills”, with terraced farms, tea and banana plantations, and busy roadside villages.
Optional stops en route:
- Kigali Genocide Memorial (before you leave town, if you want it, allow 1.5 to 2 hours). It is a sobering and important introduction to the country.
- Roadside viewpoints near Gakenke for photos of the hillside farms.
Midday: Arrive in the Musanze/Kinigi area and have lunch at your lodge.
Afternoon (choose one):
- Musanze Caves. A guided walk through a 2-km volcanic lava-tube system. It is easy, atmospheric and short (about 1.5 hours).
- Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. A community-run experience with traditional dance, a mock royal court and craft-making. It is a good way to see how tourism supports the communities around the park.
- Rest day option. If you left Kigali early and want to save energy, spend the afternoon at the lodge. The gorilla trek starts early tomorrow.
Evening: Dinner at the lodge, then a short briefing from your guide. Pack your daypack, check your boots, and charge your camera batteries.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trek
6:30 am: Breakfast, then a short drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi. Park staff hold the briefing there at around 7:00.
About 7:00 to 7:30 am: Rangers assign you to a gorilla family. The park has 12 fully habituated gorilla families, with eight permits issued per family per day, so 96 permits are available daily. Families differ in how far they range, and rangers try to match fitness levels. If you have a preference (an easier or a more challenging trek), say so at the briefing, though assignments are not guaranteed.
Trek (about 2 to 6 hours total): A drive takes you to the trailhead, then you walk through farmland, bamboo and montane forest, following trackers who locate the family that morning. Terrain can be steep, muddy and slippery, and altitude is around 2,400 to 3,000 m. A porter is worth hiring. It costs roughly $15 to $20 plus a tip, and it supports local livelihoods.
The encounter: Once you reach the gorillas, you have one hour with them. Silverbacks, mothers, juveniles and babies go about their day close by. Follow your guide’s rules: keep about 7 m back, don’t point or stare directly, keep your voice low, and don’t eat or drink near them. Flash photography is not allowed.
Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a late lunch, a shower and rest. You may also want to tip your guide, trackers and porter and write your trek notes while they are fresh.
Evening: Relax with dinner and a drink by the fire. Turn in early for tomorrow’s hike.
Day 3: Mount Bisoke Hike, then Return to Kigali
Bisoke (3,711 m) is a dormant volcano on the Rwanda–DRC border. The summit holds a beautiful crater lake, often framed by mist and giant lobelias.
6:30 am: Early breakfast, then check out and load your luggage. You will head straight to Kigali after the hike.
7:00 am: Briefing at the park headquarters, then a short drive to the trailhead. Rangers accompany every group, and armed escorts are standard on this route.
The hike (about 5 to 7 hours round trip):
- Lower slopes: You start through farmland and across volcanic stone walls, then enter forest.
- Mid-section: The trail climbs steeply through bamboo and moss-draped montane forest. This is the hardest part, and it can be muddy and slippery. Take it slowly.
- Upper section: Above the tree line, the vegetation changes to alpine scrub and giant lobelias, and the air turns cold.
- Summit: Walk to the crater rim for views down to the lake. When the cloud clears, you can see Karisimbi and the other Virunga volcanoes. Allow time for photos and a packed lunch.
- Descent: About 2 to 3 hours back down. Walking poles help your knees and your balance.
Midday to early afternoon: Return to the lodge or park headquarters to freshen up, if time allows. Your lunch will be a packed meal or an early lodge lunch, depending on how fast you hike.
About 2:30 to 3:00 pm: Drive back to Kigali (2 to 2.5 hours). You should arrive by around 5:30 to 6:00 pm. If you have an evening flight, leave a comfortable margin, ideally 3 or more hours before departure, because the hike can run late.
Upper-Midrange Lodge Options (Musanze / Kinigi area)
These generally run about $250 to $500 per person per night on a full-board basis. Rates vary by season, so confirm current prices with the lodge or your operator.
- Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Kinigi). Cottage-style rooms with fireplaces, a short drive from park headquarters. Good for early starts.
- Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel (Musanze). A smaller property with a warm, personal feel and good views toward the volcanoes. It is slightly farther from the park gate.
- Davinci Gorilla Lodge (Kinigi). Modern rooms and a calm, scenic setting in the volcano foothills. It is popular with guests who want a quieter stay.
- Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge (Kinigi). A comfortable, well-located lodge close to the park, with a good restaurant and a friendly atmosphere.
- Amakoro Songa Lodge (near Kinigi). A stylish property with sweeping views across farmland to the volcanoes. It is a good pick for a more design-led stay.
How to choose: If you want the shortest morning drive on trek day, pick a lodge in Kinigi. If you prefer more dining options and some town atmosphere, stay in or near Musanze and add 20 to 30 minutes of driving.
Practical Tips
- Best seasons: The drier months (June to September, and December to February) make the trails easier, though rain is possible year-round. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) mean muddier trails but fewer visitors. RDB has offered a discounted multi-park permit at $1,050 for visitors combining Volcanoes with Akagera or Nyungwe in the low season (November to May). That does not fit this three-day plan, but it is worth knowing about if you extend your trip.
- What to pack: Waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, a rain jacket, long trousers and sleeves (to guard against nettles), gardening gloves, a warm layer for Bisoke, sun protection, and a daypack. Pack light for the drive, as luggage space is limited in most vehicles.
- Fitness: The gorilla trek can range from easy to strenuous. Bisoke is consistently demanding because of the steep ascent. Do some stair or hill training beforehand.
- Health rules: Do not trek if you have a cold or other contagious illness, since gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases. Rangers may turn you away at the briefing.
- Tipping: Tips for guides, trackers, porters and drivers are customary and appreciated. Check with your operator for typical amounts.
- Booking sequence: Secure your permit first, then book your lodge and transport around the confirmed date. If you can only get a gorilla permit for a different day, shift the Bisoke hike to match.
