11-Day Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla and Safari Itinerary, Starting in Kigali

This journey moves from the volcanic highlands of northern Rwanda into the misty forests of southwestern Uganda, then onto the savanna and crater lakes of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Because gorilla permits are limited and should be booked well in advance, confirm your dates with a licensed operator before you finalize flights. Rwanda’s and Uganda’s permit fees have changed over time, so check current prices when you book.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the capital. Spend the afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, which offers a sobering and essential account of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Afterward, walk through the Kimironko or Nyarugenge markets to see the city’s rhythm, and have dinner at one of the restaurants along the Kiyovu hills, where the city lights spread across the valleys. Rest well, as the next few days involve early starts.

Day 2: Kigali to Musanze and Five Volcanoes Hotel

After breakfast, drive roughly two and a half hours northwest to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The road climbs through terraced hillsides, eucalyptus stands, and tea and potato fields, with the Virunga volcanoes rising in the distance. Check into Five Volcanoes Hotel, which offers views across the mountains and a comfortable base for early mornings. In the afternoon, attend the park briefing if your permit requires it, and consider a short walk through the village to meet local craftspeople. Note that golden monkey trekking is also available here as a lighter alternative to gorillas.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Rise before dawn for a light breakfast and a briefing at park headquarters. Rangers will assign you to a habituated gorilla family, and you will hike through bamboo forest and farmland for anywhere from twenty minutes to several hours, depending on where the group has moved. Once you reach them, you are allowed one hour in their presence. Silverbacks, mothers with infants, and juveniles playing in the vegetation often make this the highlight of the entire trip. Keep a seven-meter distance, follow your guide’s instructions, and avoid using flash. Return to the hotel for a late lunch and an evening of quiet reflection on the experience.

Day 4: Transfer to Nkuringo, Uganda

Leave Five Volcanoes after breakfast and head toward the Cyanika border crossing into Uganda. Complete immigration formalities, then continue to Kisoro, a small market town near the Virunga foothills. From Kisoro, a rough but scenic road takes you to Nkuringo, on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive from the border is slow, so allow most of the day. Settle into Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, which sits on a ridge with sweeping views over the forest and the Virunga mountains. Dinner on the terrace is a good way to unwind before tomorrow’s early start.

Day 5: Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

This is the most demanding and rewarding day of the itinerary. The habituation experience allows you to spend about four hours with a gorilla family that is still becoming accustomed to human presence, so you will observe their behavior more closely and for longer than on a standard trek. The hike through steep, muddy forest can be physically strenuous, so wear sturdy boots, long sleeves, and gaiters, and carry plenty of water. Rangers and guides monitor the group’s movements and keep visitors at a safe distance. The gorillas may feed, groom, rest, and travel around you, offering rare insight into their daily lives. Return to the lodge exhausted but deeply satisfied, and enjoy a hot shower and an early dinner.

Day 6: Standard Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

Recover with a slower morning and a leisurely breakfast before setting out on the standard trek. Nkuringo’s habituated families are known for their accessibility, and many visitors find the terrain slightly easier than in other sectors. You will have one hour with the gorillas. Pay attention to the smaller details: the way infants wrestle, the silverback’s calm authority, and the soft sounds of feeding. After returning to the lodge, consider a short walk along the forest edge with a local guide to learn about the medicinal plants and the Batwa community’s historical connection to the forest. This is also a good time to reflect on the two gorilla encounters you have had in the space of three days.

Day 7: Nkuringo to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Mweya Safari Lodge

After breakfast, begin the long drive northeast toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey takes most of the day, typically five to six hours, passing through tea estates, trading centers, and open countryside. Roads may be rough in places, so pace yourself and make comfort stops as needed. Arrive at Mweya Safari Lodge, which sits on a peninsula between Lake Edward and the Kazinga Channel. The lodge’s position offers excellent views of hippos and waterbirds from the terrace, and you may catch an animal or two wandering near the property in the late afternoon. Check in and enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Day 8: Afternoon Game Drive

Begin the afternoon with your first game drive, typically departing around three o’clock to catch the light as it softens. The park’s savanna and crater landscapes are home to elephants, buffalo, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, and warthogs, along with lions and leopards for those who are fortunate. Your guide will track animal activity using local knowledge and radio contact with other vehicles. Keep your voice low, stay seated, and enjoy the sunset as you return to camp. The Kasenyi plains, which are known for lions, are a common destination for this drive.

Day 9: Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Start early with a second game drive, which is often the best time to see predators and a wide variety of herbivores before the midday heat. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a rest. In the afternoon, board a boat at the Mweya jetty for a cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the natural waterway that links Lake George and Lake Edward. This is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in the park, with hundreds of hippos, Nile crocodiles, buffalo gathering at the water’s edge, and a remarkable concentration of birds, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons. Watch for elephants crossing the channel, and keep your camera ready for dramatic reflections as the sun lowers.

Day 10: Leisure Day and Optional Excursions

Use this day to rest, or choose an optional activity such as a guided birding walk, a visit to the Mweya Peninsula’s viewpoints, or a Kyambura Gorge hike for a chance at chimpanzee tracking. The gorge is a dramatic landscape of forested ravines that is well suited to a slower day. If you are interested in tree-climbing lions, the Ishasha sector to the south is famous for them, though it requires a longer drive. Spend the evening at the lodge, reviewing photographs and enjoying a final dinner under the stars.

Day 11: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Entebbe International Airport, a drive of roughly six to seven hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Allow extra time for the Kasese and Kampala roads and for any stops along the way. Entebbe is the nearest international airport for most onward flights, including connections back to Kigali if you prefer to fly out from Rwanda. Depart with memories of the volcanic slopes, the forest gorillas, and the wildlife-filled plains of Africa’s pearl.

Practical Notes

Gorilla permits in both countries are limited and should be secured months ahead, particularly during peak seasons from June to September and December to February. Rwanda and Uganda each have visa requirements, and many travelers now use electronic visa systems, though you should confirm current rules before departure. Yellow fever vaccination certificates may be required, and a travel health consultation is advisable. Pack layers, since mornings in the highlands are cold, and bring rain gear, sturdy boots, and insect repellent. Tipping guides and trackers is customary, and a reputable tour operator can help you arrange the logistics and transfers across the border.
