10-Day Uganda Fly-In Safari: Murchison Falls, Kibale and Bwindi

Route: Entebbe/Kajjansi → Murchison Falls (3 nights) → Kibale (3 nights) → Bwindi (3 nights) → Entebbe
Pace: Moderate. Flying removes roughly 25-30 hours of road transfers. The route runs north to south so the toughest trek, the gorillas, comes last.

Flight times and schedules below are approximate, so confirm them with your operator. Light aircraft are limited to soft-sided bags of about 15 kg.

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe → Murchison Falls National Park

Arrive at Entebbe in the morning. If your international flight lands late, spend the night before at an Entebbe hotel so you start fresh. After immigration, you’re met and transferred to Kajjansi airfield or Entebbe’s domestic terminal for a charter flight of about 1 hour to the Pakuba or Bugungu airstrip. Your lodge vehicle collects you for a game drive en route.

After lunch, take a late-afternoon game drive north of the Nile through the Delta/Buligi area, where Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, buffalo, Jackson’s hartebeest and Uganda kob are common. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 2: Murchison Falls Wildlife Day

Set off on a dawn game drive, when lions and leopards are most active. Return for breakfast, then take a mid-morning boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a 7 m gap. Expect hippos, huge crocodiles, elephants at the water’s edge and a rich variety of waterbirds. Disembark for the short, steep hike to the top of the falls.

Spend the afternoon at leisure or on a sundowner drive, then dinner at the lodge.

Day 3: Delta Shoebill Cruise and Optional Budongo Forest

Take an early boat trip into the Nile Delta with a guide who knows where shoebills are nesting. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, and the best chances are in the drier months. In the afternoon, choose between:

  • a game drive;
  • a guided walk in Budongo Forest (Kaniyo Pabidi) for a taste of chimpanzee habitat and forest birding; or
  • a relaxed afternoon by the lodge pool.

Day 4: Fly to Kibale (Fort Portal region)

After breakfast, return to the airstrip for a charter flight of about 1.5 hours to Fort Portal (or Kasese, depending on your operator and the aircraft). You’re met and driven to your lodge, 30-90 minutes depending on the airstrip. Settle in, then take an afternoon guided walk through crater lake country or visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, with its monkeys and abundant birds. Dinner at your lodge.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale

Kibale has one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, with 13 species and roughly 1,500 chimpanzees. Report to the Kanyanchu briefing early. Rangers lead you into the forest to find a habituated chimp community. Once found, you get one hour with them. Success rates are typically over 90%.

Back at the lodge, enjoy a late lunch and a rest. In the evening you can take a nature walk or simply watch the sunset over the craters.

Alternative: The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience costs more but is much longer. You follow researchers and chimps from their wake-up nest through the day, so you see the full range of behavior. It takes up most of the day and requires a separate permit booked well in advance.

Day 6: Flexible Day in Kibale and Crater Lakes

This is your recovery day. Options include:

  • a second chimp trek, if permits are available;
  • a guided hike around the Kasenda crater lakes;
  • a Tooro tea estate and community visit;
  • a cultural stop at Amabere Caves.

Dinner is on your own schedule.

Day 7: Fly to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for a charter flight to Kihihi (for the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors) or Kisoro (for Nkuringo and Rushaga), depending on your lodge. Flight time is about 1.5 hours with a connection. You’re collected and driven 1-2 hours to your lodge. Settle in and attend an evening briefing about your trek. Rest well: tomorrow is the big day.

Day 8: Gorilla Trekking

Report to the park headquarters by about 7:30 AM for a briefing. Trackers have already located the group, and you’re assigned a family based on your fitness and sector. Treks last anywhere from 1 to 8 hours across steep, muddy ground. Porters are strongly recommended, and gloves, gaiters and a rain jacket are essential. Once you find the gorillas, you spend one hour with them. Eating, grooming and play are common.

Afterwards you can enjoy a hot shower and a long lunch, then spend the evening relaxing with a fire or spa treatment at the lodge.

Day 9: Bwindi Nature Day

Because permits for a second gorilla trek are expensive and limited, most guests use this day for something gentler. Options include:

  • a Batwa cultural experience with the forest’s indigenous people;
  • a walk to the Munyaga or Rushura waterfalls;
  • a guided birding walk along the Ivy River trail, since Bwindi is one of the best birding spots in Africa;
  • a Gorilla Habituation Experience (Rushaga sector only), a four-hour visit with a group still being habituated.

Day 10: Fly to Entebbe and Depart

After a relaxed breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the flight back to Entebbe (about 1 hour 15 minutes). You’ll land with time for lunch or a day room, then connect to your international flight. Schedule departures for evening to be safe, as light-aircraft schedules can shift with weather.

Luxury Lodge Options

Rates and availability change, so confirm directly with your operator.

Murchison Falls (3 nights)

  • Paraa Safari Lodge: Recently refurbished, riverfront, with a big pool and the best access to the boat launch for the falls cruise.
  • Chobe Safari Lodge: A classic Nile-side lodge with strong river views and good guiding.
  • Baker’s Lodge: A smaller, more intimate option with a bush feel and personalized service.
  • Nile Safari Lodge: Good for travelers who prefer a quieter setting and tented-style rooms.

Kibale / Fort Portal (3 nights)

  • Kyaninga Lodge: The headline luxury choice, with timber cottages on a crater lake rim and Rwenzori views. Dramatic and very photogenic.
  • Ndali Lodge: A refined, family-run lodge with sweeping crater views and a strong reputation for hospitality.
  • Primate Lodge Kibale: Inside the forest itself, so you hear chimps from your cottage. Rustic-luxe rather than polished.
  • Papaya Lake Lodge: A smaller and often more affordable alternative with a lakeside setting.

Bwindi (3 nights)

  • Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (Nkuringo): Perched high above the forest with Virunga views. Arguably the most spectacular setting, but access requires a longer drive from the airstrip.
  • Bwindi Lodge (Buhoma): An attractive, smaller lodge right by the park entrance, with easy trek logistics.
  • Mahogany Springs (Buhoma): A comfortable, well-run option with good service and hot-water bucket showers.
  • Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (Buhoma): A high-end option inside the forest, with luxury tents and polished service.
  • Gorilla Heights Lodge: A boutique option with a view toward the Virunga volcanoes.

Practical Notes

Permits: Book gorilla and chimp permits as early as possible, ideally 6-12 months ahead. Non-resident gorilla permits have recently cost around $800, but rates can change, so check with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or your operator. Chimp tracking permits cost considerably less, and chimp habituation costs more.

Best season: June to September and December to February are drier, which makes the trails easier and the wildlife viewing at Murchison better. The shoulder months bring lush scenery but muddier treks.

Health: A yellow fever certificate is required, and you should discuss malaria prophylaxis with your doctor.

Fitness: Gorilla tracking is demanding. If the trek looks too hard, ask for the sedan chair service, where porters carry you.

What to pack: Long trousers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy boots, light gloves, insect repellent and a small daypack. Binoculars are valuable at all three parks.

Flexibility: Light-aircraft schedules shift with weather and passenger numbers, so a good operator will keep a buffer in your plan. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly advised.

If you’d like, I can adapt this itinerary to a specific budget level, add Queen Elizabeth National Park, or compare gorilla sectors in more detail.
