Kidepo & Gorillas: A 7-Day Luxury Fly-In Safari Through Uganda's Wild North and Misty South

Few itineraries in Uganda pair extremes as boldly as this one. On one end sits Kidepo Valley National Park, a rugged, sun-baked wilderness tucked against the Kenyan and South Sudanese borders, so remote that it remains one of Africa’s least-visited yet most rewarding parks. On the other end lies Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a cool, tangled rainforest in the southwest where half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas make their home. Connecting the two by light aircraft rather than long overland drives turns what could be an exhausting cross-country trek into a seamless week of world-class wildlife, culture, and comfort.

Day 1 — Touchdown in Entebbe

Your safari begins the moment you land. A representative meets you at Entebbe International Airport and transfers you to a private hotel, where you can shake off the journey, settle in, and rest ahead of tomorrow’s flight north. There’s no itinerary to rush through today — just a quiet first night in Uganda before the adventure properly begins.

Day 2 — Into the Wild North: Fly to Kidepo and Afternoon Game Drive

After breakfast, board a light aircraft bound for Kidepo Valley — a scenic flight that carries you from the shores of Lake Victoria to one of Africa’s last true wilderness frontiers. Landing on Kidepo’s remote airstrip, you’re welcomed by your safari guide and driven to your lodge, where sweeping views over the valley set the tone for the days ahead.

By late afternoon, you’re out on the savanna for your first game drive. Kidepo’s landscape is dramatic and open, backed by the Morungole and Napore mountain ranges, and the wildlife here has a different rhythm than in Uganda’s more visited parks. Expect strong odds of spotting elephants, buffalo herds, black-backed jackals, and Jackson’s hartebeest, with a real chance of lions making an appearance as the light softens. As dusk settles over the valley, you return to the lodge for dinner under a sky famous for its stargazing.

Day 3 — Savanna Mornings and a Karamojong Cultural Encounter

Rise early for a full morning game drive toward Kanangorok hot springs, one of Kidepo’s more unusual corners. The terrain here draws a wide mix of species, and it’s a good stretch for birdlife too — keep an eye out for ostriches striding across the grassland alongside more typical safari sightings. Your guide will track along various routes through the park, giving you the best chance of building a varied wildlife list while soaking in scenery that feels a world away from anywhere else in Uganda.

As the midday heat sets in, you head back to the lodge for lunch and some downtime by the pool or on your veranda. The afternoon shifts from wildlife to culture: a visit to a nearby Karamojong village. The Karamojong are traditional pastoralists whose way of life — centered on cattle-keeping — has changed little over generations. Walking through the village, meeting families, and learning about their customs offers a grounding, human counterpoint to the day’s earlier animal encounters. You’ll return to the lodge in the early evening to unwind and reflect on the day over dinner and those endless Kidepo views.

Day 4 — On Foot Through Kidepo, Then South to Entebbe

Your final morning in Kidepo is spent differently — on foot. A guided walking safari with an armed ranger lets you experience the park at a slower, more intimate pace than a vehicle allows. Walking safaris sharpen your senses to smaller details: tracks, birdsong, insects, and the subtler signs of wildlife that a game drive can rush past. It’s also simply a beautiful way to take in Kidepo’s open plains and distant mountain silhouettes one last time.

Back at the lodge, enjoy a relaxed lunch before your guide transfers you to the airstrip for the return flight to Entebbe, closing out the Kidepo chapter of the trip. On arrival, you’re met again and taken to a hotel in Entebbe for a comfortable overnight stay before the second half of the safari begins.

Day 5 — Fly South to Bwindi and the Realm of the Mountain Gorillas

Today marks the transition from Uganda’s dry northern savanna to its lush southwestern highlands. A flight from Entebbe carries you toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, landing at one of the airstrips serving the area (the exact one depends on which lodge you’re staying at). From there, a scenic road transfer winds through terraced hillsides and forested slopes, with the Virunga foothills coming into view as you near your lodge.

The rest of the day is left free for rest and acclimatization. Bwindi’s terrain is steep and its altitude noticeably higher than Kidepo’s flatlands, so settling in — enjoying the lodge grounds, a good meal, and an early night — is the ideal preparation for tomorrow’s main event.

Day 6 — Gorilla Trekking Day

This is the day the entire safari has been building toward. After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing, where rangers explain the rules and etiquette for the encounter ahead — everything from keeping a respectful distance to how to behave if a gorilla approaches you. Trekking groups are capped at eight people, each assigned to a family of habituated gorillas already located earlier that morning by trackers who set out at first light.

The trek itself varies enormously — it can take anywhere from one to several hours through Bwindi’s dense, misty forest, along steep and sometimes muddy trails. It’s physically demanding but never dull; the forest is alive with birdsong, other primates, and extraordinary plant life even before you reach your goal. Then, without much warning, you’re there: a full hour in the presence of a wild gorilla family. Watching a massive silverback move through the undergrowth, or young gorillas tumbling and playing nearby, is widely described as one of the most moving wildlife experiences on the planet — and photographs rarely do it justice.

Afterward, you trek back out to meet your guide for the drive to the lodge, where a well-earned rest, hot shower, and dinner await.

Day 7 — Farewell to Bwindi

Your final morning is unhurried. Enjoy breakfast with the misty, layered hills of Bwindi as your backdrop one last time — this is the scenery that gives the park its nickname, “the place of darkness,” for the way fog and dense canopy blanket its slopes. When it’s time, your guide drives you to the airstrip for your flight back to Entebbe, bringing the safari full circle.

Depending on your onward flight schedule, you may catch an evening departure the same day, or choose to add an extra night in Entebbe to fly out the following morning. Either way, you leave Uganda having witnessed two of its most extraordinary and contrasting wildernesses in a single, beautifully connected week.
