10-Day Uganda Luxury Safari: Chimpanzees, Big Game & Gorilla Trekking
Safari Overview
This itinerary combines Uganda’s three signature wildlife experiences — chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, big game and boat safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s Buhoma sector — using private road transfers and a light-aircraft flight back to Entebbe to save a full day of driving at the end of the trip. It’s built around high-end owner-run lodges and tented camps rather than large hotels, with private guides and 4×4 vehicles throughout.
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe
Land at Entebbe International Airport, where a private driver-guide meets you and transfers you to your lodge on the shores of Lake Victoria — a short 10–15 minute drive rather than the chaos of onward travel into Kampala. Entebbe is green, relaxed, and a good place to shake off jet lag before the safari proper begins. If time and energy allow, an afternoon visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Entebbe Zoo) or a stroll through the Botanical Gardens is a gentle introduction to the country’s birdlife and forest. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Luxury lodge options in Entebbe:
- The Boma Guest House – colonial-era house turned boutique hotel with lush gardens, popular with high-end travelers as a first/last night stop.
- Karibu Guest House – intimate, garden-set property close to the airport, favored by luxury safari operators.
- Emin Pasha Hotel (Kampala, roughly 40 minutes away) – a more urban, design-forward option if you’d rather overnight in the capital.
Day 2: Entebbe to Kibale National Park
After breakfast, depart for Kibale National Park, home to the highest primate density in Africa. You can travel by road (roughly 5–6 hours via Fort Portal, through rolling tea plantations and views of the Rwenzori Mountains) or take a scheduled light-aircraft flight to Kasese or Fort Portal airstrip, followed by a shorter road transfer — a good option if you’d rather preserve energy for trekking days. Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon at leisure, or an optional guided nature walk around your lodge grounds. Kibale’s forest edge lodges often border tea estates, giving striking views over the plantation rows toward the forest canopy.
Luxury lodge options in Kibale:
- Ndali Lodge – perched on the rim of a volcanic crater lake overlooking Kibale Forest, thatched cottages with private verandas and one of the most photographed views in western Uganda.
- Kyaninga Lodge – striking log-cabin-style chalets set above Kyaninga Crater Lake near Fort Portal, widely regarded as one of Uganda’s finest properties, with excellent food and spa facilities.
- Primate Lodge Kibale – located inside the national park itself, giving the shortest possible access to the trailhead for chimp tracking.
Day 3: Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Walk
An early start for chimpanzee tracking, Kibale’s headline activity. Guided by park rangers, you’ll trek through moist evergreen forest tracking one of several habituated chimp communities; encounters usually last around an hour once the group is located, amid calls, displays, and grooming behavior at close range. Serious primate enthusiasts can opt for the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience instead, which allows a full morning-to-afternoon with researchers as chimps are gradually acclimatized to human presence — a rarer and more immersive alternative to standard tracking.
In the afternoon, take the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk, a gentle guided walk through swamp forest known for eight primate species and excellent birding, including the great blue turaco. Return to your lodge for dinner, with the option of a sundowner overlooking the crater lakes.
Day 4: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Depart after breakfast for Queen Elizabeth National Park, roughly a 2–3 hour drive south through Fort Portal and past the Rwenzori foothills. En route, stop at the Rwenzori viewpoint or Amabeere Caves if time allows. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive through the Kasenyi Plains, one of the park’s richest areas for lion, elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, and hyena. Queen Elizabeth’s savanna, wetlands, and crater lakes make it Uganda’s most biodiverse park, with over 95 mammal species and 600 bird species recorded.
Luxury lodge options in Queen Elizabeth NP:
- Mweya Safari Lodge – the park’s original flagship property, dramatically sited on the Mweya Peninsula overlooking the Kazinga Channel, with pool and spa.
- Kyambura Gorge Lodge – converted from an old coffee store, perched on the rim of Kyambura Gorge with panoramic views and access to the resident chimpanzee troop.
- Katara Lodge – smaller, design-conscious property with elevated views across the Kazinga Channel and Lake George.
- Elephant Plains Lodge – newer luxury tented camp with excellent access to the Kasenyi game-viewing area.
Day 5: Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise & Game Drives
A full day exploring the park’s two ecosystems. In the morning, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the natural waterway connecting Lakes Edward and George — this is arguably the best wildlife-viewing activity in the park, with hippo pods numbering in the hundreds, basking Nile crocodiles, buffalo herds, and dense birdlife including African fish eagles, pelicans, and kingfishers lining the banks. In the afternoon, take a further game drive, or, for those interested, visit the Katwe Salt Lake villages to see the traditional salt-mining communities and crater lake landscapes of the Katwe-Kikorongo area. Overnight at your lodge.
Day 6: Kyambura Gorge or Ishasha Sector Excursion
Choose between two distinctive experiences. The first is chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge, a lush, sunken riverine forest nicknamed the “Valley of Apes,” offering a shorter, more affordable alternative to Kibale’s forest trekking. The second, better suited to those with a full day and a longer drive tolerance, is an excursion south to the Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions that rest in the branches of fig trees during the heat of the day — a rare behavior found in only a handful of places in Africa. Ishasha also positions you closer to Bwindi for the following day’s transfer. Overnight at your Queen Elizabeth lodge, or, if visiting Ishasha, consider an overnight there to break up the journey south.
Day 7: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Buhoma Sector)
Depart for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, roughly 3–5 hours by road depending on your Queen Elizabeth departure point and route via the Ishasha sector, through some of Uganda’s most dramatic scenery — terraced hillsides, banana plantations, and the thick, ancient rainforest that gives Bwindi its name (“impenetrable” is well earned; the forest dates back over 25,000 years). Arrive at your Buhoma lodge in the afternoon, with time to settle in, enjoy the forest views, and rest ahead of the following day’s trek. A pre-trek briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette is usually held the evening before or early the next morning.
Luxury lodge options in Bwindi (Buhoma sector):
- Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp – set directly inside the national park boundary, the closest luxury camp to the forest edge, with tented suites and a strong reputation for service.
- Buhoma Lodge – community-owned, eco-conscious cottages with excellent forest views and a strong sustainability ethos.
- Bwindi Lodge – luxury cottages on a ridge overlooking the forest, with spa and fine dining.
- Mahogany Springs – riverside luxury lodge just outside the park gate, known for spacious suites and personalized service.
Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Buhoma
The centerpiece of the entire safari. After an early breakfast and briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and set off with an armed ranger, guide, and trackers. Trekking difficulty varies day to day — the forest terrain is steep and dense, and reaching a gorilla family can take anywhere from one to several hours each way — but the reward is an hour spent in close proximity to a wild mountain gorilla family, watching silverbacks, mothers, and juveniles go about their daily routine. Buhoma is one of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors and generally offers a good balance of accessible trails and reliable family locations. Porters are available (and worth hiring) to help with the terrain and support the local community. Return to your lodge in the afternoon for a well-earned rest, hot shower, and celebratory dinner — many lodges present trekking certificates in the evening.
Day 9: Buhoma Leisure Day – Community & Batwa Experience
A second day in Bwindi allows for either a repeat gorilla trek (if you’ve purchased a second permit) or a gentler exploration of the area. Options include the Buhoma Community Walk, visiting local homesteads, a traditional healer, and a banana beer brewery; a guided nature walk to the Munyaga River waterfalls through the forest; or a Batwa cultural experience, learning about the indigenous forest-dwelling people who once lived within Bwindi before it became a protected area. Birders may prefer an extended forest walk, as Bwindi hosts over 350 recorded bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics. Relax at your lodge in the afternoon, with time to enjoy the pool, spa, or simply the forest views before your final morning.
Day 10: Kihihi Airstrip to Entebbe – Departure
After a final breakfast, transfer by road to Kihihi Airstrip (roughly 1–1.5 hours from Buhoma), where you’ll board a scheduled light-aircraft flight back to Entebbe, cutting what would otherwise be a full day’s drive down to about 2–2.5 hours in the air with a stop or two en route at other regional airstrips. Arrive at Entebbe International Airport in the early-to-mid afternoon in time to connect with international departures, or with a buffer if your flight home is later that evening.
