6-Day Uganda Primate Safari: Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale and Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi (Buhoma)
This itinerary starts and ends in Entebbe and Kampala. It combines the immersive Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale with a mountain gorilla trek in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and it includes a stop in Queen Elizabeth National Park along the way.
Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Kibale (Fort Portal Area)
Depart early, around 7:00 AM, for the drive west to Fort Portal. The journey takes about 5 to 6 hours with stops. Break at the Equator crossing near Kayabwe for photos, and lunch in Mubende or Fort Portal.
In the afternoon, you reach the Kibale area and settle into your lodge. If energy allows, take a short walk through the nearby crater lake region or the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary (best visited in late afternoon) for birds, monkeys, and a community-led guided walk. Have dinner and an early night, since habituation starts at dawn.
Overnight: Kibale area (Fort Portal)
Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, Kibale National Park
Wake early for breakfast and a briefing at Kanyanchu, with departure around 5:30 to 6:00 AM. Unlike standard chimpanzee tracking (about an hour with the apes), the Habituation Experience lets you spend up to four hours with a chimpanzee community still being accustomed to humans. Groups are small, with a maximum of 4 people per group.
You follow researchers and trackers from the moment the chimps leave their nests at dawn. You observe feeding, grooming, hunting, social conflicts, and calls, often from close range. Kibale holds roughly 1,500 chimpanzees and has about 13 primate species, so you may also see red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.
Return to the lodge for a late lunch and rest. In the evening, relax, or arrange a guided nature walk if available.
Overnight: Kibale area (Fort Portal)
Day 3: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha or Kasese Side)
After breakfast, drive south via Kasese, roughly 3 to 4 hours, passing crater lakes and the Rwenzori foothills. Check in at your lodge, have lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi plains or along the Kazinga Channel.
Alternatively, take the Kazinga Channel boat cruise (about 2 hours), which gives close views of hippos, buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, and abundant waterbirds. This is one of the park’s highlights. Return to the lodge for dinner.
Overnight: Queen Elizabeth National Park (Mweya, Katunguru, or Ishasha area)
Day 4: Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi (Buhoma) via Ishasha
After breakfast, depart for Bwindi through the Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Allow time for a game drive here, looking for lions resting in fig trees, plus topi, waterbuck, and elephants. The drive from Ishasha to Buhoma takes about 2 to 3 hours on winding, scenic roads through the southwestern highlands.
Arrive at Buhoma in the afternoon, check in, and have a briefing from your guide about the next day’s trek. In the evening, you can visit the Buhoma community for a village walk, or enjoy a performance by the local Batwa cultural group (arranged separately).
Overnight: Buhoma, Bwindi
Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Buhoma Sector
After an early breakfast, report to the Buhoma park headquarters by 7:30 AM for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. You will be assigned to a gorilla family, with groups limited to 8 visitors per family. Buhoma has several habituated groups, such as Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Katwe (availability varies by season and UWA allocation).
The trek can last from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. The terrain is steep, muddy, and dense, which is why the park is called “impenetrable.” Porters can be hired locally to carry your bag and assist on slopes, which also supports the community. Once you locate the family, you have one hour with the gorillas, watching the silverback, females, and playful juveniles at close range. Keep a 7-meter distance, and never use flash photography.
After returning, you may receive a gorilla trekking certificate. Spend the afternoon resting, or take a short guided walk along the Munyanga River or Waterfall Trail if you still have energy.
Overnight: Buhoma, Bwindi
Day 6: Bwindi to Kampala/Entebbe
After breakfast, begin the long return drive to Kampala or Entebbe, which takes about 9 to 10 hours, including lunch and rest stops. For a more comfortable ending, consider a domestic flight from Kihihi airstrip to Entebbe (about 1.5 hours, arranged in advance at extra cost), which saves a full day of driving and can be combined with a Kisoro-side stop if you wish.
Tour ends upon drop-off at your hotel or Entebbe International Airport.

Final Notes
Permits are the key planning item. Book gorilla and habituation slots well in advance, especially for the dry seasons (June to September and December to February), when demand peaks. The rainy months (March to May and October to November) offer lower rates but muddier trails. Physical fitness helps considerably, so practice regular walking before departure.
