5-Day Nyungwe & Volcanoes: Chimpanzee & Gorilla Trekking Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali → Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Land at Kigali International Airport in the morning, where your driver-guide meets you for the scenic drive southwest to Nyungwe Forest, Africa’s oldest rainforest. The drive takes roughly 5–6 hours through Rwanda’s terraced hills, tea plantations, and the town of Huye (Butare), with a stop for lunch en route — many itineraries pause at the National Museum of Rwanda in Huye or a local tea estate for a break and photos. You’ll arrive at your lodge by late afternoon, in time to settle in, enjoy the forest views, and rest ahead of the next day’s trek.

Upper-midrange lodge options in Nyungwe:

  • Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel – Perched on a ridge with sweeping forest views, comfortable rooms, and a restaurant terrace overlooking the canopy.
  • Gisakura Guest House / Nyungwe Forest Lodge (standard rooms) – A well-located option close to the park’s Gisakura reception, popular for its proximity to chimp and canopy walk trailheads.
  • One&Only Nyungwe House (garden rooms) – A step above midrange in its standard categories, set among tea fields with pool and spa access — worth considering if you want to stretch the budget slightly for a superior product.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe

An early start (briefing around 4:30–5:00 AM) at park headquarters, since chimpanzees range widely and rangers track their overnight nesting sites before dawn. Treks last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours round-trip depending on the chimps’ location, through dense, hilly rainforest alive with birdsong, colobus monkeys, and orchids. Once you locate the group, you get about an hour observing them feeding, calling, and moving through the canopy. Afternoon is free for an optional second activity — the Igishigishigi Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge 70 meters above the forest floor offering superb views, or a guided nature/waterfall walk. Overnight again in Nyungwe.

Note on permits: a Nyungwe chimpanzee permit costs roughly $90–100 for non-residents, plus a park entrance fee, making this leg considerably more affordable than gorilla trekking. Chimpanzee permits in Nyungwe cost around 90 dollars for non-residents, with a separate park entrance fee of about 40 dollars per person per day.

Day 3: Transfer from Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park (Musanze/Kinigi)

This is the longest driving day — about 6–7 hours north through Kigali, so many travelers break the journey with a stop in the capital for lunch, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, or simply to stretch and shop for crafts. By late afternoon you’ll reach the Musanze/Kinigi area at the base of the Virunga volcanoes, gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Settle into your lodge with views of the volcanic peaks and prepare for the next morning’s trek (early briefing, warm layers, waterproof boots).

Upper-midrange lodge options in Volcanoes/Musanze:

  • Mountain Gorilla View Lodge – Comfortable cottages with volcano views, a reliable and long-standing midrange choice near Kinigi.
  • Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge – Cozy stone-and-thatch bungalows set in gardens close to park headquarters, good value with attentive service.
  • Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel – Stylish, intimate property in Kinigi combining boutique comfort with proximity to the trailhead.
  • Virunga Lodge (entry-level rooms) – A more premium option with dramatic twin-lake and volcano views if you want to splurge slightly for scenery.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Report to park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for a briefing, cultural performance by local dancers, and group allocation to one of the habituated gorilla families. Trekking difficulty and duration vary by family location — anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours of hiking through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, often at altitude (porters are highly recommended and inexpensive to hire locally). Once you find the gorillas, you spend a strictly limited one hour observing the family — watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles at close range is the singular highlight of the trip. Afternoon is free to rest, or add an optional half-day activity such as a Golden Monkey trek, a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Center trail, or the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a look at local Rwandan life and traditions. Overnight again near Kinigi.

Note on permits: pricing has shifted through 2026, so confirm current rates before booking. RDB announced revised gorilla permit prices for 2026, with Rwandans and East African Community citizens paying $200 and other African visitors paying $500, while the standard price for international visitors had previously been $1,500; the new lower fees do not apply during the June–October 2026 peak season. Outside that window, non-resident foreign visitors should budget for the standard $1,500 rate.

Day 5: Musanze to Kigali → Departure

After a relaxed breakfast, drive back to Kigali (about 2.5–3 hours). Depending on your flight time, use the extra hours for a city tour — the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market for local crafts and coffee, or a farewell lunch at one of Kigali’s rooftop restaurants — before transferring to the airport for your onward or return flight.

Practical notes

  • Permits: Book gorilla and chimpanzee permits well in advance — 3 to 6 months ahead is recommended given daily limits (roughly 96–112 gorilla permits issued per day across habituated families, and a similarly limited number of chimp permits in Nyungwe). Prices and seasonal discounts have changed multiple times in 2026, so verify current rates with the Rwanda Development Board or your tour operator at time of booking.
  • Fitness and gear: Both treks involve uneven, sometimes muddy or steep terrain. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, gardening gloves (for grabbing vegetation), a rain jacket, and a daypack with water are essential. Porters (roughly $15–20 plus tip) are worth hiring for both treks.
  • Minimum age: 15 years old for gorilla trekking.
  • Best time to go: The long dry season (June–September) and short dry season (December–February) offer the easiest trekking conditions, though trekking happens year-round.
  • Budget guide: Beyond permits, expect upper-midrange full-board lodging in the $250–500 per night range, plus $150–250 per day for a private vehicle and driver-guide if arranging transport independently rather than through a full-service operator.
