The best time for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is during the two dry seasons: June–September (peak) and December–February. Dry conditions make trails through the dense, hilly rainforest of Volcanoes National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Kibale far easier to navigate, since rain otherwise turns them into thick mud. These months also bring less frequent rainfall, clearer skies for photography, and more predictable wildlife behavior—chimps especially tend to stay closer to feeding areas rather than ranging widely as they do when fruit is more dispersed in the wet season.
The trade-off is that these dry months are also peak tourist season, meaning higher demand for limited daily permits, pricier lodges, and busier trailheads. The wetter “green” seasons (March–May and October–November) offer lower costs, fewer crowds, lush scenery, and easier last-minute permit availability, making them appealing for budget-conscious or mud-tolerant travelers. Whichever season you choose, book permits months ahead (particularly in Rwanda, where prices run higher) and pack waterproof gear and sturdy boots, since rainforest weather can be unpredictable year-round.
Mountain Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking (common in Rwanda and Uganda) means hours in humid, muddy rainforest at altitude, so your gear needs to handle both exertion and unpredictable weather.
Clothing
- Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in neutral colors (khaki, green, brown) — avoid bright colors and camouflage (the latter is often restricted for civilians in these countries)
- A waterproof, breathable rain jacket — rainforest showers are frequent and sudden
- A warm fleece or light jacket for cool mornings, especially at higher altitudes
- Thick socks (some trekkers wear two pairs to reduce blister risk and deter safari ants)
- Gardening or thin gloves to protect hands from stinging nettles and thorny vegetation
Footwear
- Sturdy, broken-in waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and grip — trails are steep, muddy, and slippery
- Gaiters, if you have them, to keep mud and insects out of your boots
Essentials
- A daypack to carry water, snacks, and layers
- 2–3 liters of water
- Energy snacks or a packed lunch, depending on trek length
- A walking stick (often provided free by park staff, but bring your own if you prefer)
